I could have sworn you'd done a thing on ossicles before... but I am too lazy to go back and comb through the archives now.
I am intrigued by the bone surface: Are the wispy red lines hints of blood? Or are they there just to "look cool"? (There would be nothing wrong with the latter.)
Artistically I like the framing and wide aspect ratio you've presented. That and the lighting make for a theatrical (movie-like) effect.
I did a project on the process of hearing about a year-and-a-half ago, but I didn't post it here, I don't think. Some of the images from the project may have been on my portfolio site for a while, but they aren't there now.
The wispy red lines are sort of a combination of the two possibilities you've suggested.
The wide aspect ratio--854x480--was required. HDTV proportions or something.
This is, in fact, a still from my animation, so I'm glad it's theatrical. :)
