reconstructive surgery for dummies: how to repair a flexor digitorum profundus tendon

(Click for bigness)

For our surgical orientation class, one of our assignments was to create some thumbnail sketches for a surgery of our choice. I chose the repair of a "jersey finger," or Zone 1 flexor tendon rupture--basically, when you snag your ring finger on an opponent's jersey, and your flexor digitorum profundus tendon breaks. The injury usually goes undetected for a while, though, which complicates the whole fixing-it thing.

[I no longer have the book in my possession; I can't believe I neglected to write down the page numbers.])

  1. Nice little how-to. Did you write the verbiage yourself, or did it come from some manual? The opening paragraph seemed to me to have some distinct Josy-ness in there, before the document settled into full-blown medicalese. ;)

    Sorry about your camera. :(

But congratulations for getting through another semester. :)

  2. I mostly wrote the text. I paraphrased it from my source, anyway.

I also just realized that I never cited the source, which I'm usually pretty good about. I'm adding a citation now.

Oh, and it turns out the camera's okay, but its rechargeable batteries need replacing. (I thought it might be a battery issue and replaced the batteries before... but apparently my replacement-testing-batteries were too drained to work in the camera, too.)

  3. I'm glad about the camera. I've also had my primary and backup batteries both be out of juice when I tried them. It kinda sucks that batteries are continually losing charge just by sitting around, even when they are not hooked up to anything, but such is the current state of engineering and/or the laws of nature. Plus they gradually lose rechargeability. Ah well, better the batteries than the camera.
