I was inspired by Barnaby Ward's work today. This bears little/no resemblance to his style. But it was fun, and I can always use some practice drawing figures.

I like this. I agree it doesn't look much like Barnaby Ward's stuff (just based on a quick peek at the link provided), and to me it doesn't look particularly like Josy Conklin stuff either. It could just be I haven't seen enough stuff of yours that does look like this. Hmm... I think the pose and composition are pretty Josyish. I am probably just not used to seeing your work in this medium, or electronic simulation thereof. Or maybe I'm just not used to seeing sketches and sketch-like stuff from you (though you have posted some). This feels a few iterations away from what I would expect from you, which isn't a bad thing. I remember there was that one teacher who wanted you to be freer and not "clean up" as much. I do think "loose" is apt for this piece.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment, John!
ReplyDeleteThis is generally how my first draft/sketch of any given drawing looks. But without color.
I'm generally a ridiculous perfectionist, and I hate to show work where any line is out of place. Sketches like these are, to me, the equivalent of getting drunk and losing my inhibitions. Making them feels good. I dunno how good they LOOK, but they FEEL good. :)
I'm trying to bridge the gap between the anal uptight perfectionist and the easygoing super-sloppy scribbler.
(This particular image is obviously on the side of the latter. ;) )
