The semester is over! So I'll be showing you a few examples of WHY I've been totally absent for the past few weeks.

This requires a bit of a backstory.
There is a thing called a 3dMD scanner. You sit in a chair, and two cameras stereoscopically figure out what your face looks like in three dimensions. It turns this information into a mesh that's actually usable in 3D modeling programs like 3Ds Max.
A few months ago, I had access to one of these things.
These are, I think, what the computer calculated from the camera images. You can see that there's a lot of information missing in my ear areas and under my chin. Oh, yeah, and the entire back of my head.So... featured as the main post image is my head. With no eyebrows, short red hair, and a bowler. And a particular skin texture applied, which was the point of the exercise--we were just supposed to do the hand model, but... y'know...
It's kind of interesting--a lot of my classmates have favorite aspects of working with 3Ds Max. Some like lighting, some like texturing, some like making backgrounds, some like compositing... I think I kind of enjoy modeling and messing with meshes. It's incredibly frustrating at times, but it's incredibly satisfying when you actually solve the problem of how to effectively sculpt something.
I made this a while ago but didn't post it because my lighting and shadows are wayyyyy off. And because the head is kind of ridiculous. :D
(P.S. The teapot is a basic shape that comes with the 3Ds Max. You say, "make a teapot!" and it makes a teapot. I didn't sculpt it.)

I've been unstalkerishly quiet on your blog(s) lately. This isn't because I've stopped paying attention but rather because I've been at a loss for something of value to contribute. (And because I was out of town for a few days shortly after you posted this and during the beginning of your JSP posts.)
ReplyDeleteI'll say this: Congratulations on making it through the semester!
On the shorter, stouter, ridiculously headed version of you: very amusing, and I love the hand. I also very much appreciate that you seem to be much more open about sharing images of yourself lately. (Maybe the rigors of grad school don't allow you the time or energy to be as guarded as you had been; maybe it's a conscious attempt to open up; whatever, it's welcome. :)
The other image that I know you're referring to was silly of me to post.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm no stranger to posting images of myself! :P
