coffee!

Assignment: create an 8.5x11" ad for a magazine about a topic of your choice. Then, using the same theme/campaign, create a design for a 9x3" billboard.

Oh, and print out actual physical color prints of your designs.

...so for those of us who don't have color printers, we needed to locate a color printer. I've had fairly good experiences with Kinko's before (which is now FedEx-Kinko's, by the way), so I stuck with 'em but tried a closer location.

Silly Josy!

Just a heads-up: if you decide to print something at Kinko's, upload it online and pick it up later. If, like me, you decide that you don't have the time to wait the requisite 2-3 hours for the order to be printed, DON'T TRY TO DO IT IN-STORE. I was gruffly directed to some old PCs in the back that charge 25 CENTS A MINUTE.

There was a laptop dock that only charged 10 cents/minute; unfortunately, my Mac was all "OH NO YOU ARE NOT UPLOADING THIS CRAZY SOFTWARE ONTO ME. For-GET it."

After some struggling with the PC (I've been using Macs since they were Macintoshes, though I am growing more Windows-friendly as my classes necessitate it) and the frustrated clerk...

...anyway. It got printed.

And thank God I tested the in-store paper cutters on some scrap paper before taking them to my actual prints; the blades were so dull they shredded the test scraps.

P.S.:
Coffee prevents Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and dementia.
Coffee prevents Type 2 Diabetes.
Coffee prevents several types of cancer.
Coffee prevents gallstones.
These statements are not evaluated by the FDA nor fully 100% proven, and there's fine print for all of them. Some are exaggerated a bit.
Plus: with the same fine print as the previous sentence, coffee causes bladder cancer, infertility, PMS, stillbirths, osteoporosis, gastrointestinal irritation, and increased LDL cholesterol.
Just in case you were wondering.

  1. I love your ads! These show off your very special brand of... well... humor, actually.

I think I also like the new stay-on-the-page commenting better than the pop-up kind.

Oh, hm, not sure about the preview though.

  2. Oh hey, I also meant to say something about your ordeal (I guess I was just really thrown by the preview thing).

I don't think anyone has anything to be ashamed about when they go to some unfamiliar computer (regardless of what type) and can't figure it out right away by themselves. I'm also a little surprised they weren't at least Mac-aware, if not outright Mac-supporting. (I could have sworn I've been to print shops with both PCs and Macs in them.)

  3. Wow, I've really have not see medical art like this before. There's some funny stuff. I'm not sure if it's suppose to make me laugh or squirm, or a bit of both. Thanks for adding a different perspective to my blogroll!

    I love the coffee ad!

  4. *whew* I though this was going to tell me what kind of nasty things were GROWING inside my coffee maker. I'm so relieved.

Although, I'd probably drink it anyway.

  5. So I'm going to live forever, but may be infertile.... if that's what you are telling me I'm ok with that. BRING ON THE COFFEE!

ps: I hope I wasn't any inspiration for you for this concept. Don't get between me and my coffee. :D

  6. John- Sorry about the preview! I can't control it; this is a (relatively?) new option offered by Blogger. To get rid of it, I'd have to do a fair amount of recoding an' stuff.

Theoretically, the software that my Mac flat-out rejected was supposed to be Mac-friendly... for OS 10.2 and up. Maybe 10.5.5 is just not an operating system that the programmers accounted for when they were designing the software howevermany years ago.

And, I mean, in this day and age, I really should be familiar with computers.

...On the other hand, earlier tonight, I spent over half an hour on the phone with my mother trying to teach her how to export photos from iPhoto and--bless her heart--attach them to an email. :D

So maybe you're right; I guess it takes all kinds. :)

Scoop- This is one of the most random, warmest and fuzziest comments I've gotten in a while. Thank you so much for that!

Voz- I can't believe I didn't think of that interpretation! Whoops. Thanks!

Lindsey- You only inspired me a little bit. ;)
I actually did an organic chemistry research project in undergrad about coffee (and its molecules and their effects and so forth). For graphic design, since I figured I needed a topic that was universally appealing... why break a trend? :)

  7. It is a very interesting subject, go and reward yourself with something from Starbucks for a job well done.

  8. Actually, it's FedEx Office now, because they need to be more like Officemax and have an identity crisis. Just hope you didn't do the late night/early morning rush to a 24hr location. Looks good, the imagery of flowers and greenery in coffee is nice, even if I don't drink coffee.
