Are you wondering why I posted a photo of a surgical stapler purse-string suture-maker on my doodleblog? 'Cos IT'S NOT A PHOTOGRAPH! It's my first-ever serious 3ds Max project, lovingly hand-modeled (using splines and primitives and so forth), skylit, and textured. Consider that I was introduced to the program about 5 weeks ago.
This model is actually my third attempt. I spent several weekends in a computer lab trying to make a good, solid mesh with no n-gons--one weekend it was something like 10 or 15 hours--and always eventually came to the conclusion that what I had was just plain unsalvageable. I was going to take screenshots or low-res renders of my previous failed attempts, but... just trust me.
I have basically lived and breathed 3ds Max for the past week in order to get this assignment done. It's getting a lot easier to look at this model since I've stepped back, since most of that week was spent comparing my work to the actual stapler and saying "Oh man! I need to move this part over here, and this bit here is all wrong, and my texture needs to be shinier--no, not THAT shiny!--and what about my triangulated mesh?!"
It's still a little tough for me to see past the flaws.
(Facts about Josy, #14:
I'm really bad at accepting compliments.)
Also:
I put in at least 50 hours on the handles (including my two previous scrapped attempts). The little teeth in front took maybe two hours of Booleaning things together. And OF COURSE it's the teeth that seem to impress everyone.
Check out some of my classmates' awesome works, too!
Lindsey made a reflex hammer and Annie made a S-s-s-SURGICLIP!

It rocks!
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to see it side-by-side with an actual photograph of it. (Well, interesting to people who haven't spent dozens of hours doing the computer model, perhaps less so for those who have.)
I can't do that, John.
ReplyDelete...then you'll start doing the play-by-play critique that I've been doing for days! We can't have that. :P
still blows me away. I was even talking about it to other people (not in our class) this evening. They saw it and thought it was a photograph. I've already said this to John but it reminds me of one of the mega machines in the early Star Wars films. Awsomnemo? i think yes!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the shout out Josy! Yes, I just put my reflex hammer(s) up now after fixing it up a bit! Your instrument looks fantastic! I wish I was there to see it initially. :(
ReplyDeleteAnnie- Oh my God, you're totally right. I made the Star Wars suture-er.
ReplyDeleteLindsey- Link: fixed/edited. :D
You didn't miss much; it looked a lot like this, except it was on a projector screen and I apologized for EVERYTHING. :)
Well, that's pretty amazing.
